Virginia served in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) for 2 1/2 years during WWII where she worked as a physical therapist. She married and was a dedicated wife for 69 years. She served as an elder in the Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the New Earth Covenant Community. Virginia was an excellent pianist and played all kinds of music sharing her music at any opportunity. Even during her last years of life with severe dementia she continued to play piano.

18 – Kryss Chupp
On March 8, 2001, Kryss Chupp (a member of Christian Peacemaker Teams) accompanied women (and men) from Acteal, in the hills of Chiapas, Mexico, down the road to the military outpost which was about a mile away. The peaceful, Mayan indigenous community of Las Abejas, living in the village of Acteal seemed to be interpreted by the Mexican government as a challenge to their authority. In 1997, paramilitary forces, backed by the Mexican Army, burst into the tiny chapel in Acteal and massacred 45 men, women and children as they prayed. Soldiers on the nearby road did nothing to stop the slaughter.
At that time, the Mexican Army had established 18 military bases and outposts in the small county of Chenalho where Acteal is located. Soldiers regularly interfered in the daily lives of community residents with threats and intimidation, detentions and incursions into their villages.
Kryss and Las Abejas developed a plan to distribute “Exit Visas” – a document required in Mexico to travel out of the country – to all the soldiers stationed at the nearby military post. The “Exit Visa” encouraged the soldiers to leave this indigenous territory, leave the military altogether, and return home to their families where they were dearly wanted and needed.
Kryss spent many days with the resident survivors of the massacre developing this action to happen on March 8, 2001, International Women’s Day. On the morning of March 8, Kryss and those of us with the Christian Peacemaker Teams Delegation gathered for prayers and music with the residents of Acteal prior to the 1 mile walk down the road to the military outpost. I was walking toward the end of the group. Looking ahead, over the heads of most residents who were somewhat short, I could clearly see Kryss (5’7”) striding forward, rising above the crowd. As we approached the outpost, the women, clutching handfuls of “Exit Visas”, scurried to hand them out to every soldier they could find.
When they had distributed them all, we gathered at the entrance to the outpost and joyfully returned up the road to Acteal. I wish to honor Kryss for this powerful, joyful event she led that day. The memory stays with me 18 years later, and counting! ~Gretchen Williams

Juanita Santamaría, como es conocida popularmente en San Luis La Herradura, tiene 45 años de edad y próximamente estará cumpliendo sus 46 años. Juanita es la séptima hija nacida en el seno de la familia constituida por 11 miembros. (7 mujeres y 2 hombres, y sus padres) del núcleo familiar su padre y uno de sus hermanos ya fallecieron. Juanita a sus 18 años ya se había convertido en una joven líder, muy dinámica y proactiva, muy solidaria y con los valores de la empatía, siempre estaba preocupada por su comunidad y por la superación de la familia, Juanita con grades esfuerzos logro estudiar el bachillerato, tiempo después obtuvo la oportunidad y comenzó a trabajar en la misma escuela donde estudiaba en San Luis La Herradura, Juanita se convirtió en la secretaria de los maestros de dicha escuela y desde ahí comenzó a promover el trabajo de reciclaje de los desechos sólidos, campañas de saneamiento ambiental y círculos de estudio con ancianos y adultos que no sabían leer y escribir. APRODEHNI conoció a juanita en el año 2002, y desde entonces ha sido referente y enlace para la coordinación del trabajo comunitario, juanita es una mujer con mucho temple y firmeza, de principios y valores, trabajadora incansable que siempre ha promovido el desarrollo comunitario e impulsado iniciativas con la niñez y juventud para prevenir la violencia, es una lideresa sensible a los problemas ambientales y siempre está sirviendo a la comunidad en momentos de emergencia , ya que San Luis La Herradura por su característica geográfica está expuesta a inundaciones y es ahí donde juanita siempre está en la vanguardia.
Juanita también es madre de dos hijos, de Alicia Beatriz de 20 años y de Israel Antonio de 14 años.
Juanita hace 7 años ha superado una de las enfermedades mortales (Cáncer terminal en la matriz en grado 3) una enfermedad que la obligo a someterse a un tratamiento delicado durante más de una año. Esta situación impacto mucho en juanita, en la familia y la comunidad, quienes siempre la mantuvieron en cadena de oración durante todo este tiempo. Después de todo este tiempo juanita logro superar la enfermedad, sin embargo esta misma situación le trajo dificultades en el trabajo pero que con su lucha incansable logro que la restituyeran
Ahora juanita ama con más intensidad su trabajo con la comunidad, con las mujeres, con los niños, niñas, jóvenes y ancianos. Juanita trabaja con distinto programas de atención a la niñez y juventud, promoviendo el deporte, la alfabetización y el trabajo con mujeres para empoderarlas sobre sus derechos.
Juanita es para muchas mujeres y hombres, un ejemplo de seguir, un ejemplo de lucha y perseverancia, mujer comprometida y forjadora de cambios en la comunidad, mujer combativa sensible y muy fuerte frente a las adversidades. Para la mujer que es un ejemplo de vida: Su nombre es Francisca Pumay Originaria de Guatemala del departamento de Chimaltenango, vivió por 22 años en la aldea de San Antonio localizada en el pueblo de San Martin, dejo su país para trasladarse a Honduras dejando toda su familia a tras y comenzó de nuevo en un lugar desconocido para ella, para mi es una mujer valiente y fuerte, pues a sus 9 años perdió a su madre quedándose a cargo de sus hermanos pequeños, luego se casó dando a luz a tres hijos de los cuales una de ellas murió a sus nueve años a causa de leucemia, tuvo un matrimonio que duro 41 años, junto a su esposo construyo un hogar ejemplar formando a sus hijos, enviudando a sus 55 años de edad, su vida no ha sido fácil, ya que ha obtenido muchas pérdidas físicas de los seres que más ha amado más sin embargo ella ha logrado salir adelante y mostrarse fuerte para su familia, a pesar de los golpes de la vida, siempre tiene una palabra exacta para sus hijos, sobre todo cada día llena de mucho amor a sus hijos y nietos.
Ama la cocina y no es por presumir pero es una gran cocinera de la gastronomía Guatemalteca, ella simplemente es perfecta, decidí tomarla como mi ejemplo porque es una gran mujer virtuosa, luchadora y que a pesar de cada dificultad ella es valiente y sabe salir adelante, confiando en Dios, confiando en la voluntad perfecta del padre.
Ella es mujer, hija, hermana, esposa, madre, abuela, amiga, ella simplemente es mi motor que me impulsa cada día a seguir adelante ella, simplemente es mi modelo de mujer a seguir, la representación más bella de la virgen en esta tierra, simplemente ella es mi MADRE el gran amor de mi vida. ~ Veronica Lopez

Quiero honrar a mi madre: Cloe Bessonart. Su cuidado y atención maternal, hizo posible el desarrollo de mi vida. Pero también, ella es un instrumento de la Vida para cientos de personas. Durante 35 años de profesión como partera (obstetra) ayudó a nacer a cientos de seres humanos. Y en alguna ocasión, a tres generaciones.
Anécdota. Hace dos años, una mañana caminábamos por la ciudad. Un señor (50) años, con su hija (29) y su nieta (11) se acercaron a saludarle. Luego de conversar, nos despedimos, y mi mamá me dijo: “A esos tres, yo les ayudé a nacer”. ¡Mi mamá había realizado los partos en que nació el señor, luego la hija y finalmente la nieta! Gracias, mamá!
I want to honor my mother: Cloe Bessonart. Her maternal care made possible the development of my life. But also, she is an instrument of the life for hundreds of people. During 35 years of profession as midwife (obstetrician) helped to birth hundreds of human beings. And sometime, to three generations. Two years ago, one morning we were walking around the city. A man (50) years, with his daughter (29) and his granddaughter (11) came to greet us. After we talked, we said “goodbye”, and my mom told me: “To those three, I helped them to be born.” My mother had made the births in which the man was born, after his daughter and finally the granddaughter! My mother Rosetta D’Apice Donoghue taught tolerance by forming a community. where young women, of different faith traditions lived with one another in upstate New York during the summer months. They helped themselves from the arts, music, athletics, horseback riding and nature. She talked tolerance. Camp Hi-wing was non-sectarian.
My best friends we’re children of other religions. Children of different faiths could live in community at the summer camp. We learned tolerance.
As a physical educator my mother recognized young women with physical abilities, recognizing the most talented with an annual dinner at West Point. They would be recognized by an award for the most physically fit high school students in New York State.
She helped build a day care center which was a place where displaced poor women in the community were helped. When a road expansion was cutting through the city of Yonkers, she built a nursery school for poor children whose mothers had to work during the day. She gathered her friends together who could help finance the new building that still exists today.
She had compassion for others. She shared her skills and encouraged women to develop new skills. She empowered women of different faiths with 30 years of directing a girls’ summer camp. Younger women from diverse faith traditions could be in community. She was a visionary who took a hunting lodge and turned it into a girls camp.
She empowered women in the arts, athletics and nature. She rose above her Italian immigrant background to fulfill a life-long dream of obtaining a doctorate degree in school psychology at age 65. ~ Penny Deloca
