PROJECTS IN NUTRITION AND HEALTH

Baja Verapaz - Health Education program fights persistent malnutrition by teaching poor indigenous families in rural Guatemala to produce abundant nutritious food. This is important because Guatemala has the fourth highest rate of chronic malnutrition in the world and the highest in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Friends of Nepal Pariwar - Women’s Reproductive Health: The mission of Friends of Nepal Pariwar Foundation is to improve the health and well-being of women and their families in rural Nepal by supporting a network of registered nonprofit community organizations in Nepal and strengthening their capacity to sustain and expand health and development services

In 2011 EPIC sponsored a visit to Honduras by Salvadoran farmers to see the work of COSECHA, another EPIC partner organization. This began a very valuable farmers-to-farmer teaching experience between people living in similar dry areas and dealing with similar problems.

La Semilla del Progreso, an agricultural training center providing intensive training for farmers from surrounding communities and afterwards continues to support them in the sometimes delicate transition from conventional practices to regenerative organic agriculture.

THE TEMPISQUE RICE PROJECT
EPIC is addressing an urgent need - adapting to climate change by promoting ecological farming in Central America and Mexico. Planting an indigenous upland rice, that is both drought-resistant and hurricane-tolerant, is one current strategy to combat serious food insecurity in this countries.

Four EPIC projects are now participating in this promising initiative.
